How to Step into Your Next Chapter with Purpose

For leaders in transition

Finding your personal purpose

Your most important leadership role yet.

For years, you’ve led a business, built teams, made difficult decisions, and lived by a set of core values that guided your organization. You knew the mission. You understood the vision. You had a clear purpose.

But here’s a question that many successful business leaders eventually face: what happens when your title changes, but your life doesn’t stop?

This isn’t about stepping away from life. It’s about stepping into your next chapter with intention.

Whether you’re preparing for another career opportunity, transitioning ownership of your business, serving on boards, mentoring others, or simply creating more space in your life, the question isn’t “What am I retiring from?” The better question is “What am I moving toward?”

You’ve defined the company’s values. Have you defined your own?

Many leaders spend decades developing company values but rarely stop to define their own. Your business may have stood for integrity, innovation, accountability, or service. Those values shaped decisions and culture — but have you ever written down the values that guide your life?

What fades

The identity a title gave you

The calendar goes quiet. The meetings disappear. The recognition fades. Without a clear personal purpose, it’s easy to feel adrift after leaving a role that once defined who you were.

What remains

The value only you can give

Your experience, wisdom, and ability to contribute remain incredibly valuable. This season offers something many leaders haven’t had in years: the chance to choose deliberately.

Ask more than “what should I do next?”

Rather than jumping straight to a plan, begin by asking deeper questions.

  • What activities give me energy instead of draining it?
  • What impact do I still want to have?
  • What relationships deserve more of my time?
  • What strengths have I not fully explored?
  • What legacy do I want to build beyond my career?

Your next chapter doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. For some, it may mean launching a new venture. For others, coaching emerging leaders, volunteering, consulting, teaching, or finally pursuing passions that have been waiting patiently in the background. Purpose isn’t found overnight — it’s discovered through reflection, curiosity, and action.

A personal purpose exercise

Set aside 30 uninterrupted minutes with a notebook.
  1. What accomplishments have made me feel most fulfilled, and why?
  2. What values have consistently guided my biggest decisions?
  3. When do I feel most alive and engaged?
  4. Who do I enjoy helping the most?
  5. If money weren’t a factor, how would I spend my time?
  6. What do I want people to remember about the difference I made?

Now look for the themes

Read back through your answers. You’ll likely notice words that appear again and again. Those repeated themes become the foundation of your personal purpose statement.

Complete your sentence

“My purpose is to use my experience, strengths, and values to   so that  .”

Don’t worry about making it perfect. Your purpose will evolve as you do.

Businesses have missions. Organizations have visions.

Perhaps it’s time to give yourself one too.
